INTRODUCTION
Wicca
is both a religion and a craft. As a religion it is the oldest in the
world and worships The Goddess and The God.
Wicca and witchcraft
are frequently linked together as describing the same craft but there
are slight differences in that witches are believed to be more skilled
at utilizing personal power in conjunction with the energies within natural
objects. Today both words seem interchangeable so from now on I have chosen
to use the term wicca.
The Goddess is seen as the creaturess
of the universe bringing fertility, wisdom, love, compassion, healing
and power. The God is masculine and presides over deserts, forests, wild
animals, death and resurrection.
Wicca has nothing to do with devil
worship, as some people without knowledge fear or shall we say assume
thanks to Hollywood! It is an unending path of light, magic, love, healing,
and awakening. Wiccans revere nature and see the true divine beauty of
the universe.
Wicca as
a craft, envelops magic (spells),divination (psychic powers) and positive
healing using natural objects and personal power.
Some wiccans
prefer to work alone and others to join like minded folk and become part
of a coven but all abide by the Wiccan Rede:
'Eight
words the Wiccan Rede fulfil,
An` it harm none, do what ye will!'
Magic in itself is neither black
or white but neutral and the power lies in the beholder to decide its
outcome but no sensible wiccan would use magic for negative results since
all believe in the threefold law;
What
good you do returns to you threefold;
What
harm you do also returns to you threefold
The significance of the number three
in wicca comes from the three faces of The Goddess: The
Maiden, The Mother and The Crone ( find out more on our Goddess
pages)
Another significant number thirteen
comes from the fact there are thirteen lunar cycles and until the Romans
decided to change the calendar for their convenience there were thirteen
months. To discourage people from using the old system they spread the
word that the number thirteen was unlucky! Naughty Romans!
Certain numbers and symbols play
an important role in wicca and over the next few months each month I will
be adding to the witches broom closet further objects, symbols or numbers
with a brief explanation of their importance - have a sneaky look at what's
in the broom closet now!
Blessed be!
Remember the Nine
Million
Bright Goddess of the Summerlands
Whom we shall meet, and know, and remember
and love them again!
